How much do you know about hard water? How much do you think about it? It’s far to say that we all know a bit about it, but would admit that it’s less than we probably should. An awful lot of us, if asked, would say “Hard water? I’m aware that it’s bad – I think? But I’m not sure why, and I’m not sure in what way.”. That’s a fairly common and understandable reaction. We have a lot of things to stay aware of. Hard water, for a lot of us, isn’t a big priority.
So, when you find out a bit more about hard water, it can be quite a shock to see just how much damage it can cause, and how pervasive that damage is. It is worth taking some action to ensure that you are not besieged by these issues. If you don’t, they can cost you a lot of money and take up a lot of your time.
1. Hard Water Causes Health Issues
The first thing to state here is that there is no proof that hardness of water causes illness of a serious nature. Let’s not get off on the wrong foot on that point. However there are definite issues with skin and hair that are caused by bathing and showering in hard water.
It has been shown to contribute to hair loss, and people who have skin issues such as psoriasis find it aggravates those issues. Additionally, it is feared that drinking hard water can contribute over time to more serious health issues.
2. Hard Water Damages Appliances
It’s fair to say that we often only act on that which we can see. So, if we don’t see health issues and haven’t got conclusive proof of them, they may not be a motivator to get something done. Water heaters, washing machines and kettles, however, are known to fail more often in areas with hard water. This is because the water contains deposits of magnesium and calcium, which can build up in appliances that heat water.
3. Hard Water Damages Glassware
Appliance damage builds up over time in hard water areas. However, if you use a dishwasher and notice that glassware washed in it is picking up spots, then it’s down to hard water. If your glasses start to come out of a dishwasher looking worse than when they went in, it’s an issue. It may be time to learn the truth about water softener systems revealed in a number of sources.
4. Hard Water Ruins Clothes
Do you find yourself having to replace clothes because your whites are becoming grays? Are your bedsheets becoming scratchy after just a few washes? Chances are, you are living in a hard water area, and the minerals in the water you wash those sheets in are ruining what they touch. It is vital to make some changes, because some damage takes time to happen and can’t be seen.
Hard water can cause a great deal of damage to different things in different ways over time. For your own health, and from a financial point of view, it is important to do something about it – sooner rather than later.
